When and where
- Of the 22 crashes with a recorded time, 15 happened between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., 1 between 4 and 8 p.m., 4 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and 2 between 6 and 10 a.m.
- 68% happened in darkness.
- 0 of the 22 deaths were on expressways or parkways; 22 were on arterials and local streets.
Who owns the roads where they happened (2015–2024)
FARS has recorded the owner of the roadway since 2015. Of the 13 fatal crashes in North Amityville since then:
- State highways 7 (54%)
- Town roads 4 (31%)
- County roads 2 (15%)
Ownership matters in New York because claims against a county, town, city or village generally require a notice of claim within 90 days (General Municipal Law § 50-e), while claims against the State are brought in the Court of Claims under Court of Claims Act § 10. This is general information, not legal advice.
Rate: 7.9 traffic deaths per 100,000 residents per year, against 9.1 for Suffolk County. This is a resident-based rate, not a measure of how risky the roads are to drive: crashes are counted where they happen, not where the people involved live, so a small community crossed by a major highway shows a high rate.

All reported crashes in the Town of Babylon, 2021–2024

Notable facts about North Amityville
- The Suffolk County Traffic and Parking Violations Agency, which describes itself as covering the county's five western towns, was created by county legislation on April 1, 2013.[8]
- Great Neck Road, which runs past North Amityville toward the Nassau County line, is designated Suffolk County Road 47.[4]
- The Town of Babylon operates a satellite Municipal Building inside North Amityville, at 456 Albany Avenue, housing its Parking Violations Bureau and Abandoned Vehicle Unit.[10]
How the roads got here
New York State Route 110, known regionally as Broadway, is a state highway; the New York State Department of Transportation's official touring-route description places it at "Amityville, Huntington, Halesite," running north from the Amityville area into the Town of Huntington.[2] Suffolk County's own road inventory lists Great Neck Road, which runs past the North Amityville area toward the Nassau County line, as County Road 47, running from NYS Route 27A (Montauk Highway) north to the county line.[4]
By contrast, NYSDOT's official description of NYS Route 27 (Sunrise Highway) through this part of the South Shore names Valley Stream, Lynbrook, Rockville Centre, Freeport, Massapequa Park, North Babylon and Great River, but does not name Amityville or North Amityville, so this report does not verify Sunrise Highway as running through the hamlet.[3]
Government, courts and policing
As an unincorporated hamlet of the Town of Babylon, North Amityville has no government of its own.[1][10] The Suffolk County Police Department's First Precinct, headquartered at 555 Route 109 in West Babylon, states on its own site that it "proudly covers the Town of Babylon," which includes North Amityville; its community-policing (COPE/CSU) officers are reachable at (631) 854-8195, and the department's emergency communications center is (631) 852-6400 for callers outside Suffolk County.[5][6]
The Suffolk County Traffic and Parking Violations Agency (SCTPVA), created by county legislation on April 1, 2013, describes itself as adjudicating "parking summonses, red light camera citations and moving violations in the five western towns of Suffolk County" from its office at 100 Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge; its own site does not name the five towns, so whether the Town of Babylon is among them is not confirmed here.[7][8] Separately, the Town of Babylon operates its own Parking Permit Office and Parking Violations Bureau out of the Municipal Building at North Amityville, 456 Albany Avenue; how that Town-level bureau relates to the county agency was not clarified in the sources opened for this report.[10]
Geography and government
North Amityville is an unincorporated hamlet in the Town of Babylon, tabulated by the U.S. Census Bureau as the North Amityville census-designated place, with a land area of 2.357 square miles and no water area.[1] The hamlet has no government of its own; it is served by the Town of Babylon, whose Town Hall is at 200 East Sunrise Highway in Lindenhurst.[9] The Town nonetheless maintains a satellite office inside the hamlet itself: the Town's own department directory lists a "Municipal Building at North Amityville" at 456 Albany Avenue, housing the Town's Abandoned Vehicle Unit, Civil Service/Personnel office, Parking Permit Office and Parking Violations Bureau.[10]
