History
Coram's best-documented early history is a single Revolutionary War raid. By November 1780 the British army had been collecting hay at Coram to feed its cavalry and transport horses in occupied New York City, and General Washington's intelligence chief, Major Benjamin Tallmadge, decided the depot was worth destroying.[1] Tallmadge wrote to Washington proposing the raid; Washington's reply from headquarters, dated November 11, 1780, told him "the destruction of the forage collected for the use of the British army at Coram upon Long Island is of much consequence that I should advise the attempt to be made," while cautioning that "in all cases, you will take the most prudent means to secure a retreat."[1]
Tallmadge left Fairfield, Connecticut, at 4 p.m. on November 21, 1780, with 80 men in eight open whaleboats, landing near Mount Sinai Harbor that night.[1] After a rainstorm delayed them a day, the party marched across the island and, before dawn, stormed the British-built Fort St. George at Mastic, capturing it "without firing a single shot" before beating back a British counterattack from a nearby house.[1] Tallmadge then picked twelve men, mounted on horses captured at the fort, to ride on to Coram, "where they quickly put to rout the small forage guard" and burned roughly 300 tons of hay before rejoining the main party for the row back across Long Island Sound to Fairfield.[1] Washington's letter of commendation, dated November 28, 1780, told Tallmadge he was "particularly well pleased with the destruction of the Hay which must I should conceive, be severely felt by the Enemy at this time," alongside his praise for the capture of Fort St. George.[1]
How the roads got here
Coram sits at the junction of two state highways: NYSDOT's official touring-route description of NY 25 (Middle Country Road) names Coram directly among the towns the route passes through on its way toward the North Fork, and its description of NY 112 likewise lists "Patchogue, Medford, Coram, Port Jefferson Station (NY 25A)" among the communities on that route.[2] North Ocean Avenue, which also runs through the hamlet, is not a state route despite sometimes being labeled "Route 83": Suffolk County's own road list designates it County Road 83, running under the names "North Ocean Avenue / Patchogue Mt. Sinai Road."[3]
The Town of Brookhaven's own local roads are maintained from within Coram itself: the Town's Highway Department, responsible for "more than 3,500 lane miles of Town-owned roadways" across all of Brookhaven, is headquartered at 1140 Old Town Road in Coram.[4]
Government, courts and policing
Coram has no government of its own; it is an unincorporated hamlet of the Town of Brookhaven.[4] The Suffolk County Police Department's Sixth Precinct, headquartered a few miles away at 400 Middle Country Road in Selden, "protects and serves several hamlets and incorporated villages within the Town of Brookhaven (North)," the area that includes Coram.[5][6] As in the rest of the Town, Brookhaven cannot be sued over a road or sidewalk defect without prior written notice under Town of Brookhaven Code Chapter 84, "Notice of Defective or Dangerous Conditions."[14] More serious criminal and civil matters go to the Suffolk County court complex at 400 Carleton Avenue in Central Islip.[11]
