          "Coram's best-documented early history is a single Revolutionary War raid. By November 1780 the British army had been collecting hay at Coram to feed its cavalry and transport horses in occupied New York City, and General Washington's intelligence chief, Major Benjamin Tallmadge, decided the depot was worth destroying.[1] Tallmadge wrote to Washington proposing the raid; Washington's reply from headquarters, dated November 11, 1780, told him \"the destruction of the forage collected for the use of the British army at Coram upon Long Island is of much consequence that I should advise the attempt to be made,\" while cautioning that \"in all cases, you will take the most prudent means to secure a retreat.\"[1]",
