What Happened
A 77-year-old man died Monday after losing control of his e-bike and colliding with an oncoming cyclist on Schermerhorn Street in Downtown Brooklyn, according to News 12 Long Island. The crash happened just before 2:30 p.m. outside the Hilton Hotel near the intersection of Smith and Schermerhorn streets.
The NYPD says the 77-year-old was riding a pedal-equipped e-bike northbound in the Schermerhorn Street bike lane when he lost control. He struck a 47-year-old cyclist traveling southbound — the opposite direction — in the same lane. The physical mechanism was a direct, head-on collision between the two riders.
The older man suffered serious injuries in the crash. Paramedics rushed him to NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital. He died there, News 12 Long Island reported. The 47-year-old was not hurt. He remained at the scene, according to investigators.
