What Happened
David Maiman, 44, of Middle Island was killed Wednesday afternoon after his 2020 Lexus crossed into oncoming traffic on Rocky Point Yaphank Road in Rocky Point and struck a 2020 Jeep, the Suffolk County Police Department said.
The crash was reported at approximately 1:30 p.m. Maiman was heading north on Rocky Point Yaphank Road when his Lexus veered into the southbound lane and hit the front driver side of the Jeep, according to a Suffolk County Police Department news release cited by Newsday.
Maiman was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Newsday reported. The Jeep’s driver, a 45-year-old Port Jefferson man, was treated at the same hospital for minor injuries and released.
Suffolk County Police impounded both the 2020 Lexus and the 2020 Jeep for safety inspections. The investigation into the crash was continuing as of Wednesday evening, September 9, 2026, per the department’s news release.

Detectives from the Suffolk County Police Seventh Squad are handling the investigation and are asking anyone with information about the collision to call 631-852-8752. The impoundment of both vehicles allows investigators to examine mechanical condition, data recorder output, and any other physical evidence relevant to why the Lexus left its lane.
