History
Port Jefferson Station is an unincorporated hamlet of the Town of Brookhaven, tabulated by the Census Bureau as its own census-designated place.[4] Before 1910 the hamlet and its post office were called Echo, a name the Comsewogue Public Library's local history archive traces to Echo, a locally celebrated trotting racehorse owned by Captain Nathaniel Dickerson and bred at the Joseph Rowland Farm in nearby Miller Place, out of bloodlines tracing to Hambletonian 10 and the imported stallion Messenger.[1] Squires -- later remembered locally as the "Father of Port Jefferson Station" -- served as the Town of Brookhaven's Receiver of Taxes, published a newspaper called the Port Jefferson Echo, and developed the Belle Croft subdivision; he lived from 1856 to 1934.[2]
In 1905, Dean Alvord, the developer of the nearby planned community of Belle Terre, and Ralph Peters, president of the Long Island Rail Road, had a neoclassical, pergola-style railroad station built at Echo, which the Comsewogue Public Library's archive describes as intended as "a fitting gateway" to the Belle Terre development, complete with a dedicated road to the Belle Terre gatehouse and a special passenger car running between New York City and Port Jefferson.[8]
How the roads got here
Two state highways meet at Port Jefferson Station. NYSDOT's official touring-route description routes NY 25A "to Port Jefferson, Port Jefferson Station, on Hallock Avenue, Rocky Point," and separately gives NY 112 (Main Street) a route from Patchogue through Medford and Coram that ends "Port Jefferson Station (NY 25A)" -- meaning Route 112's northern terminus is at Route 25A in this hamlet.[9][10] NY 347 also reaches the hamlet from the west: NYSDOT describes it running from west of Hauppauge through Hauppauge, Nesconset and Terryville to a point "east of Port Jefferson Station (NY 25A)".[11]

As an unincorporated hamlet, Port Jefferson Station falls under the Town of Brookhaven's prior-written-notice law, Chapter 84 of the Town Code, adopted June 16, 1987 by Local Law No. 7-1987, which bars a civil action against the Town over a defective road, sidewalk, or snow/ice condition unless written notice was first given to the Town Clerk or Superintendent of Highways and the Town failed to act within a reasonable time.[7]
The Town of Brookhaven maintains no police department of its own; the Suffolk County Police Department's 6th Precinct, headquartered at 400 Middle Country Road in Selden, covers the hamlets and incorporated villages of the northern Town of Brookhaven, including Port Jefferson Station.[6]
