When and where

  • Of the 19 crashes with a recorded time, 11 happened between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m., 6 between 4 and 8 p.m., 2 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and 0 between 6 and 10 a.m.
  • 74% happened in darkness.
  • 6 of the 19 deaths were on expressways or parkways; 13 were on arterials and local streets.
  • In at least 4 crashes, a driver had a reported blood-alcohol concentration of .08 or higher. This counts known test results only; NHTSA's official alcohol estimates, which impute untested drivers, are higher.

Who owns the roads where they happened (2015–2024)

FARS has recorded the owner of the roadway since 2015. Of the 10 fatal crashes in Lake Ronkonkoma since then:

  • State highways 6 (60%)
  • Town roads 2 (20%)
  • County roads 2 (20%)

Ownership matters in New York because claims against a county, town, city or village generally require a notice of claim within 90 days (General Municipal Law § 50-e), while claims against the State are brought in the Court of Claims under Court of Claims Act § 10. This is general information, not legal advice.

Rate: 6.8 traffic deaths per 100,000 residents per year, against 9.1 for Suffolk County. This is a resident-based rate, not a measure of how risky the roads are to drive: crashes are counted where they happen, not where the people involved live, so a small community crossed by a major highway shows a high rate.

All reported crashes in the Town of Brookhaven, 2021–2024

New York's crash file codes each crash to a town, city or village — never to a hamlet — so the finest official count that covers Lake Ronkonkoma is for the Town of Brookhaven, which contains it. Police reported 44,155 crashes there from 2021 through 2024 — about 30.2 a day. 11,428 (25.9%) injured someone and 172 were fatal. [D]

Notable facts about Lake Ronkonkoma

  • An 1882 county history put Lake Ronkonkoma's greatest depth at 72 feet and described it as circular, with no visible outlet.[6]
  • The county-maintained remnant of the Long Island Motor Parkway, signed CR 67, ends at Rosevale Avenue in Lake Ronkonkoma.[17]
  • Ronkonkoma Division No. 306 of the Sons of Temperance was organized at the lake on February 19, 1868 with 13 charter members, and surrendered its charter on April 6, 1876.[5]
  • The Sachem Central School District was created on April 21, 1955 when voters in the Lake Ronkonkoma, Holbrook and Farmingville/Holtsville districts approved centralization.[19]
  • The Lake Ronkonkoma Historical Society runs the 14-room Fitz-Greene Hallock House at 3269 Pond Road on about three and a half acres.[26]

History

The settlement around the lake went under several names at once. An 1882 history describes a continuous settlement of about three hundred people extending "to the borders of Lake Ronkonkoma" and called Lake Grove, and notes that the names Lakeland, Lakeville and Ronkonkoma "have been names applied to nearly the same" locality.[5] The lake also gave its name to a temperance lodge: "Ronkonkoma Division, No. 306, Sons of Temperance was organized here February 19th 1868, with 13 charter members," surrendering its charter on April 6, 1876.[5]

In the twentieth century the lakeside communities were folded into a single school district. The Sachem Central School District records that "On April 21, 1955, citizens from Farmingville/Holtsville, Holbrook, and Lake Ronkonkoma school districts voted to form a central school district, later named Sachem," a response to rapid population growth in Brookhaven and Islip towns; the district's new board seated three members from each of the three predecessor districts.[19] Sachem still describes its territory as reaching "east on the beaches of Lake Ronkonkoma."[19]

How the roads got here

The east-west road along the lake is county, not state. Suffolk County's roads list carries CR 16 as "Terry Road / Smithtown Boulevard / Portion Road / Horseblock Road," running from "NYS RT 25, Middle Country Rd to CR 80, Montauk Hwy" — a single county route that changes name four times as it crosses the lake district and runs on into Farmingville and Yaphank.[9]

The north-south connection is CR 93, listed by the county as "Lakeland Avenue / Ocean Avenue / Rosevale Avenue" and terminating at Portion Road.[16] Rosevale Avenue is also the eastern end of one of the most historically significant roads on Long Island: the county's list gives CR 67 as "Vanderbilt Parkway / Motor Parkway," running from "NYS RT 231, Deer Park Rd to CR 93, Rosevale Ave."[17] In other words, the surviving county-maintained remnant of William K.

NY 25, Middle Country Road, is the state route along the north of the lake district; the New York State Department of Transportation's touring-route book describes NY 25 running east through "Floral Park, Mineola, South Huntington, Smithtown, Branch, Coram, Riverhead."[18] On the local grid, a 2022 Suffolk County road-closure notice circulated by the Holbrook Fire Department names the loop that rings the lake's south and east — "Rosevale Avenue from Pond Road to Southern Boulevard," "Smithtown Boulevard/Portion Road from Rosevale Avenue to Ronkonkoma Avenue" and "Lakeshore Road/Pond Road from Portion Road to Church Street."[20]

Law and legal history

Which municipality you sue over a pothole here depends on which side of the lake you were hurt on, and each of the three towns has enacted a different prior-written-notice law. The Town of Brookhaven's Code, Chapter 84, is titled "Notice of Defective or Dangerous Conditions"; § 84-1 provides that "No civil action shall be commenced against the Town of Brookhaven or the Superintendent of Highways for damages or injuries to persons" or property caused by a defective highway, street, bridge, culvert, crosswalk or pedestrian walkway unless written notice, "identifying with particularity the specific nature and location" of the defect, was given beforehand by a person with firsthand knowledge to the Town Clerk or Superintendent of Highways by personal service or registered or certified mail.[11] The Town of Smithtown's equivalent sits in Chapter 245, "Streets and Sidewalks," whose Article III is "Civil Claims Notice" and whose "§ 245-13 Written notice of defects required" carries the rule.[12] The Town of Islip's version, § 47A-3, requires that notice "was actually given to the Town Clerk or Commissioner of Public Works."[13] The three provisions differ in who must be served and how — Brookhaven alone demands firsthand knowledge and service by mail or in person — so the identity of the road's owner is the first question in any Lake Ronkonkoma road-defect claim.[11][12][13]

The court system splits along the same lines. The Unified Court System's history of the Suffolk County District Court records that the court "became operational in January 1964," replacing the town justice courts of the five western towns, and that "Fourth District Court encompasses the town of Smithtown," "Fifth District Court encompasses the town of Islip" and "Sixth District Court encompasses the town of Brookhaven."[14] The Sixth District sits at "Suffolk County Sixth District Court 150 West Main Street Patchogue NY 11772," where it hears the "Brookhaven Town Ordinance calendars" — the town-code prosecutions that most often reach lakeside property owners.[15] Islip-side ordinance and landlord-tenant matters are heard at the Ronkonkoma courthouse on Veterans Memorial Highway.[21]

Government, courts and policing

There is no village government at Lake Ronkonkoma; the hamlet is unincorporated and its services come from the three towns and from Suffolk County. On the Brookhaven side, the Town's Highway Department — which the Town describes as "one of the largest in the State of New York" — maintains the local streets, its Superintendent "charged with maintaining more than 3,500 lane miles of roadway within the Town of Brookhaven."[22]

Policing is by the Suffolk County Police Department, which serves all three towns here. The Sixth Precinct "protects and serves several hamlets and incorporated villages within the Town of Brookhaven (North)" from 400 Middle Country Road in Selden; the Fourth Precinct's front desk is at "727 Veterans Memorial Hwy, Smithtown"; the Fifth Precinct, at "125 Waverly Ave, Patchogue," covers southern Brookhaven and eastern Islip.[23][24][25]

The lake's own institutions are local and volunteer. The Town of Brookhaven's list of historic sites gives the Lake Ronkonkoma Historical Society at 328 Hawkins Avenue, Lake Ronkonkoma, with a museum open Saturdays, and records that the Society owns and operates the Fitz-Greene Hallock House at 3269 Pond Road — "14-room farmhouse set on 31/2 acres. Annual House Tour, Last Saturday in September or by appointment."[26] Suffolk County maintains Lake Ronkonkoma County Park, which the county says "is located off Smithtown Boulevard along Lake Shore Road, at the northern shore of Lake Ronkonkoma," with a fishing area, ball fields, handball and basketball courts, an accessible playground and a picnic area.[8]

The lake

Lake Ronkonkoma is a kettle in the glacial outwash of central Long Island, and nineteenth-century observers described it in terms that still hold. The 1860 state gazetteer lists the fresh-water lakes of Suffolk County and names "the principal of which is Lake Ronkonkoma, on the w. border of Brookhaven." Richard Bayles in 1874 recorded that it "is one of the largest and most beautiful sheets of fresh water on the island," that "The lake is about three miles in circumference, and lies some twenty feet below the average surface of the neighboring land," and that "It is surrounded by a beach of white sand from which peculiarity it is said the Indian name it bears was derived." The 1882 county history added the measurement that is still quoted: "This lake, which is circular in form and has no visible outlet," occupies one of the bowl-shaped depressions in the drift deposit, and "Its greatest depth is 72 feet."[6] The same 1882 writer dismissed the lake's folklore in a single line, calling the traditional stories about it "not worthy of repetition" — a useful corrective to the legends that later accreted around the place.[6]

The lake's most consequential feature, legally, is that it is a boundary. Bayles located it "on the line of Brookhaven, Islip and Smithtown," and the 1882 history, writing from the Islip side, said "Ronkonkoma Lake lies in this town at its northeastern" corner.[6]
