QUICKANSWER: A 21-year-old man was arrested Monday night after a police chase through a residential neighborhood in Freeport ended with his car crashing onto the front lawn of a home on E. Several pounds of marijuana were seized from the vehicle and the driver now faces multiple charges including leaving the scene of an accident with serious injury.
What Happened
A 21-year-old man was arrested following a police chase through a residential neighborhood in Freeport on Monday night, News 12 Long Island reported, citing village officials. The chase covered less than a mile before the driver’s car struck another vehicle and crashed onto the front lawn of 186 E. Seaman Ave. ABC7/WABC Eyewitness News reported that the crash occurred shortly before midnight Monday.
Village of Freeport Mayor Robert T. Kennedy told News 12 that police had initially been surveilling a specific person on foot and were unable to locate them. Officers then observed a car circling the area multiple times. “They were concerned if this vehicle may have been there to pick up this individual,” Mayor Kennedy said. “When they went to stop the vehicle, he took off.”
Surveillance video provided to News 12 shows the driver exit the car and flee on foot as officers pursued him down Rutland Road and searched the area. ABC7 reported that surveillance video it obtained shows the car traveling down East Seaman Avenue before striking another vehicle and crashing through a fence onto a residential property.
The homeowner described the damage to News 12: “A lot of mess, you can see it. My fence [was] taken out.” A second vehicle — described as white and sustaining significant head-on damage — was towed shortly after 5 a.m., according to News 12.
Mayor Kennedy told News 12 that both individuals involved in the collision were taken to the hospital and that several pounds of marijuana were seized from the crashed vehicle.
A Freeport resident who heard the collision, Victor Sanchez, told ABC7 he estimated the car was traveling at approximately 90 mph: “It was GRRRRRR, and somebody was really going fast; if it was fast, probably 90 miles an hour, he was going really fast.” A man who identified himself as the driver’s father told ABC7 the incident was a police chase, noting that officers arrived within seconds of the crash.
The 21-year-old driver faces charges including fleeing officers, unlawful fleeing, leaving the scene of an accident with serious injury, and reckless driving, according to News 12.
Nassau County police told News 12 they did not have any information on the incident. News 12 noted that a Nassau County police helicopter was observed circling overhead during the incident.
Road and Transit Impact
Freeport police closed E. Seaman Avenue between Rutland Road and N. Columbus Avenue overnight for the investigation, according to News 12. The roadway had reopened and the crashed vehicle had been removed from the property by early Tuesday morning.
