A tractor-trailer driven by a Philadelphia-based driver overturned on the Long Island Expressway exit ramp near Jericho shortly before 9 a.m. on Sunday, July 26, 2026, prompting a temporary shutdown of the off-ramp, according to a Nassau County police spokesman. As Newsday reported, the crash occurred in the westbound lane of the southbound exit ramp at Exit 41S.
The driver told Newsday he was hauling bananas when a box truck abruptly cut in front of him at the exit, forcing a split-second decision. “The box truck, right here off this exit, just jumped in front of me. And I had no choice — either get into a crazy accident, or do a soft landing over here,” he said, pointing toward the grass alongside the road. Rather than allow a chain-reaction collision, the driver chose to guide his rig onto its side in the grass. “Instead of making it worse than what it is, let me just fall right here on my side. So, that’s what happened,” he explained.
The maneuver, while dramatic, kept the situation from escalating into a multi-vehicle crash. The driver told Newsday he walked away completely uninjured. “God is good, man. It’s crazy … I’m just grateful I ain’t got no scratches, bruises — nothing,” he said. “I landed perfectly in the grass. It was just a blessing.” Nassau police confirmed that the driver was unhurt.
Following the crash, crews were able to right the tractor-trailer. According to the Nassau police spokesman, the closure was limited strictly to the Exit 41S off-ramp — no lanes on the main LIE traveled were shut down as a result of the incident.
