What Happened
A 29-year-old motorcyclist from Manorville was seriously injured Friday afternoon when his motorcycle collided with a Tesla making a left turn, according to Suffolk County Police. James Lapham was driving a KTM motorcycle northbound on Weeks Avenue when the motorcycle struck a 2020 Tesla that was turning left onto Weeks Avenue from Calendar Road at 4:31 p.m. on April 10, police said.
Lapham sustained serious injuries in the collision and was transported to NYU Langone Hospital – Suffolk in Patchogue for treatment, according to authorities. The driver of the Tesla, Stephanie Saladino, 42, also of Manorville, was also injured in the crash but suffered only minor injuries. Saladino was transported to a local hospital for treatment of her injuries, police reported.
The impact of the collision was significant enough that both vehicles involved were impounded by police for a safety check, according to Suffolk County Police. The crash occurred during the late afternoon hours on a Friday, a time when traffic is typically heavy as commuters head home from work and begin their weekend activities.
Suffolk County Police Seventh Squad detectives have taken over the investigation into the motor vehicle crash. Detectives are actively seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has additional details about the circumstances leading up to the crash. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the exact sequence of events and any contributing factors that may have led to the serious collision.
The crash represents the type of intersection collision that frequently results in serious injuries, particularly when motorcycles are involved. The force of impact between the motorcycle and the Tesla was sufficient to cause serious injuries to the motorcyclist while leaving the Tesla driver with comparatively minor injuries, illustrating the vulnerability of motorcyclists in traffic accidents.
Both victims in this crash were residents of the same Manorville community where the accident occurred, adding a local dimension to the incident. The fact that both the motorcyclist and the Tesla driver lived in Manorville suggests they may have been familiar with the intersection where the crash took place, though familiarity with local roads does not always prevent accidents from occurring.
Location & Road Context
The collision occurred at the intersection of Weeks Avenue and Calendar Road in Manorville, a residential area of Suffolk County on Long Island. This intersection represents a typical suburban crossing where local streets meet, with Calendar Road feeding into the larger thoroughfare of Weeks Avenue. The crash happened as the Tesla was making a left turn from Calendar Road onto Weeks Avenue, a maneuver that required crossing the path of the northbound motorcycle.
Manorville is located in the town of Brookhaven in central Suffolk County, and Weeks Avenue serves as one of the local connector roads in the area. The intersection where the crash occurred is in a mixed residential and commercial zone, with moderate traffic flow during typical weekday afternoon hours. Left-turn collisions at intersections like this one are among the most common types of serious traffic accidents, particularly involving motorcycles, as the turning vehicle crosses directly into the path of oncoming traffic.
Investigation & Legal Proceedings
Suffolk County Police Seventh Squad detectives have launched a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision. As part of the investigation, both the KTM motorcycle and the 2020 Tesla have been impounded for safety checks, which will likely include mechanical inspections to determine if any vehicle defects or malfunctions may have contributed to the crash.
Investigators are actively seeking witness statements and any additional information that might help clarify the sequence of events leading to the collision. Anyone with information about the crash is being asked to contact the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752. The investigation will likely examine factors such as vehicle speeds, visibility conditions, traffic signal timing if applicable, and whether either driver may have been distracted or impaired at the time of the collision.
Broader Impact
The serious injury sustained by the motorcyclist in this crash highlights the particular vulnerability of motorcycle riders in intersection collisions, where left-turning vehicles frequently fail to see or properly gauge the speed and distance of approaching motorcycles. The impoundment of both vehicles for safety checks indicates that investigators are taking a thorough approach to determining all possible contributing factors, which could include mechanical issues, sight line obstructions, or other environmental factors at this specific Manorville intersection.
