What Happened
A 19-year-old from Floral Park on Long Island was killed Friday night in a single-vehicle crash on Route 287 in Lycoming County’s Pine Township, Pennsylvania, according to state police. The fatal accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. as the driver was traveling south on the two-lane state road, approximately six miles south of Morris.
State police report that the driver lost control of his Nissan Xterra while driving southbound on Route 287. The sequence of events began when his SUV initially veered off the right side of the roadway. However, the vehicle then came back onto the pavement, crossing both lanes of the two-lane highway before leaving the roadway again and going down a small embankment on the opposite side.
After leaving the roadway, the Nissan Xterra struck a tree and overturned, according to the police investigation. The impact and rollover caused severe trauma to the young driver, who became trapped inside the overturned vehicle. Investigators determined that the driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, which likely contributed to the severity of his injuries.
The driver was reportedly traveling from Ski Sawmill to Williamsport when the fatal crash occurred, according to the police report. The route would have taken him through the rural Pine Township area where the accident happened. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but the driver’s injuries proved fatal.
A deputy county coroner pronounced the driver dead at the crash scene, according to a press release issued by Lycoming County Coroner Charles Kiessling Jr. The coroner’s office took jurisdiction of the case given the fatal nature of the accident. Following the on-scene investigation and official pronouncement, the driver’s body was transported to the Lycoming County Forensic Center, located in Williamsport’s Newberry neighborhood, for further examination.
