Incident location, Long Island
What Happened
A 22-year-old Bellport man was killed and three others — including the driver — were injured when a 2015 BMW veered off Bellport Avenue in Medford and struck multiple trees in the early-morning hours of Monday, October 6, 2025, according to Suffolk County police.
The crash was reported at approximately 2:50 a.m. on Bellport Avenue, between Long Island Avenue and Horseblock Road, an area of western Suffolk County that sees regular commuter and residential traffic even in overnight hours. According to Patch, Jefry Valdez Cruz, 25, of Medford, was behind the wheel of the 2015 BMW, traveling southbound on Bellport Avenue, when his vehicle suddenly veered into the northbound travel lane. The car then left the roadway entirely and struck several trees along the road’s edge.
The lone fatality was Edgar Guevara Ramos, 22, of Bellport, who was riding as a passenger in the vehicle. Ramos was pronounced dead at the scene by an EMT from the Yaphank Fire Department, according to Suffolk County police. First responders arrived to find a chaotic crash scene in the pre-dawn darkness, with four occupants inside the heavily damaged BMW.
Valdez Cruz himself sustained serious injuries in the crash and was transported by emergency medical personnel to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment, Patch reports. Two additional male passengers in the vehicle — a 24-year-old from Medford and a 26-year-old from Selden — were also transported to Stony Brook University Hospital. Both are expected to survive; police described their injuries as non-life-threatening.
In total, the single-vehicle crash left four people injured or killed: one passenger dead, the driver hospitalized in serious condition, and two other passengers treated for lesser but still significant injuries. Suffolk County police impounded the 2015 BMW following the crash for a mandatory safety check, a standard procedure in fatal collisions that can help investigators determine whether any mechanical failure contributed to the vehicle’s behavior prior to impact, according to Patch.
The precise cause of the crash — including why the vehicle drifted from the southbound lane into oncoming traffic before leaving the road — has not been officially established. No charges had been announced as of the time of initial reporting on Monday afternoon. Suffolk County police detectives from the Fifth Squad are leading the investigation and have asked any witnesses or individuals with relevant information to come forward.
Location & Road Context
Bellport Avenue is a north-south residential and commuter corridor in the Medford hamlet of Suffolk County, running through a densely wooded stretch between Long Island Avenue and Horseblock Road. The tree-lined character of this segment of road — which made the crash immediately fatal for one occupant — is common throughout central Suffolk, where roadways cut through undeveloped wooded buffers with limited shoulder clearance. At roughly 2:50 a.m., traffic volume in the area would have been minimal, meaning no other vehicles were reported to have been involved. Our incident database contains 319 recorded accidents in Suffolk County on Long Island, reflecting the consistently high crash rate across the county’s extensive road network.
Stony Brook University Hospital, which received three of the four crash victims, is one of Suffolk County’s primary trauma centers and is routinely designated for serious injury cases originating from crashes across the eastern half of Long Island.
Investigation & Legal Proceedings
As of Monday afternoon, Suffolk County police had not announced any charges against Valdez Cruz. The Fifth Squad detectives assigned to the case are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact them directly at 631-854-8552. The 2015 BMW was impounded for a safety check, per standard protocol, which may provide investigators with additional data on vehicle speed, airbag deployment, or mechanical status at the time of impact.
The investigation remains open and active. No toxicology results, speed estimates, or cause-of-crash determinations had been released publicly at the time of this report.
Broader Impact
Single-vehicle crashes occurring in the late-night and early-morning hours — particularly those between midnight and 4 a.m. — are among the most deadly categories of road accidents on Long Island, often involving fatigue, impaired driving, or excessive speed as contributing factors. Suffolk County has seen several such incidents in recent months, including a motorcyclist seriously injured in a motor vehicle crash and a separate sobriety checkpoint operation that resulted in eight arrests, underscoring the ongoing focus by law enforcement on nighttime road safety across the county.
