"Peconic is one of the ten hamlets of the Town of Southold on Long Island's North Fork,[16] tabulated by the U.S. Census Bureau as the Peconic census-designated place.[17] The Town's own hamlet history says the settlement now called Peconic was \"first known as West Southold Plantation\" and, for a short time in the mid-nineteenth century, as Hermitage, after an elderly recluse who lived on Peconic Lane; but \"for most of its existence\" the hamlet has carried the name Peconic, which the Town translates as the Native American word for \"Small Plantation.\"[1][2] The philologist William Wallace Tooker reached the same translation independently in his 1911 study of Long Island's Indian place names. Tracing the name through seventeenth-century deed and testimony spellings — Peaconeck (1649), Peheconnacke (1659), Pehaconnuck and Pehik-konuk (1667), Peaconnock (1679), and others — to an Algonquian root parallel to the Massachusett peuk-komuk or peakomuk (\"little house\"), Tooker concluded that \"Peconic might be translated as a 'small plantation'.\"[3] He also recorded a Southampton-area witness, Paucamp, testifying in 1667 that the locality \"had been an ancient seat of sachemship time out of mind.\"[4] Crucially, Tooker's account shows the hamlet's name and the bay's name share one root rather than either being derived from the other: the underlying Indian place name for a limited locality was later extended to \"the river that separates the towns of Southampton and Riverhead, the Peconic Bay, and a village in Southold town\" — the modern hamlet.[5]",
"Near the hamlet's rail line, the \"Jefferson store\" stood at the heart of the village: Captain Horace Prince, owner of a local lumber yard, built it in 1855, and its second floor served as a hall for plays, dances and community gatherings.[6] Peconic also had a direct tie to the White House — President Grover Cleveland appointed Jessie Lewis Case postmaster of Peconic.[7]",
"On Mill Lane, the Old Mill combined water and wind power after it was built in 1841, by the Town's account, until \"a terrible November storm\" in 1898 tore the arms from the windmill.[8][9] Suffolk County's history of the adjoining Goldsmith Inlet describes a tidal grist mill, the Goldsmith Mill, that \"operated for more than 50 years (1843-1898)\" on the same shoreline; the two accounts differ on the opening year but agree the mill went out of use in 1898 and may describe the same structure.[10]",
"South of the hamlet center, the peninsula between Broadwaters and Hutchinson's creeks known as Indian Neck was, in the Town's words, \"the home of famous and influential painters such as the Wiles family and the Prellwitz family\" during an artist colony there in the early twentieth century.[11] One of those painters, Henry Prellwitz, N.A. (1865–1940), is described by the Southold Historical Museum as \"a summer resident of nearby Peconic\" whose painting of a storm damaging his own dock was exhibited at the National Academy in the 1930s.[12] On September 22, 2025 the National Park Service listed a related Indian Neck property, High House & Studio at 7134 Indian Neck Lane, on the National Register of Historic Places, recording its location as \"Southold (Hamlet of Peconic).\"[13]",
"Peconic sits in the North Fork's wine country. Lenz Winery, at 38355 Route 25 in Peconic, was founded in 1978; a decade later \"Peter & Deborah Carroll bought the Lenz Winery in 1988, ten years after its founding,\" when Long Island's wine community \"comprised fewer than ten established wineries.\"[14] A Suffolk County special grand jury's history of the North Fork, compiled after a 2015 crash in neighboring Cutchogue, found that \"in the 1970s and 1980s, the local potato industry declined; wineries came to the North Fork, buying up land, planting grapes\" and opening tasting rooms across the area that includes Peconic.[15]"

"County Road 48 (Middle Road) is, in Suffolk County's own account, \"a Suffolk County Road,\" and the Town of Southold may post signs on it only \"with the cooperation of Suffolk County\"; that county-ownership status, documented in a 2016 county grand-jury report on the North Fork, applies to its stretch through Peconic as it does elsewhere on the North Fork.[21] Roads other than NY 25 and CR 48 are Town roads: the Town of Southold's Highway Department \"provides maintenance and improvements to over 200 miles of Town roads,\"[22] a category that includes local Peconic connectors such as Peconic Lane and Mill Lane, neither of which carries a state or county route number."
