"Deer Park is an unincorporated hamlet of the Town of Babylon, Suffolk County, tabulated by the Census Bureau as a census-designated place.[1] Town of Babylon Historian's office material recounts a local tradition that the area's scrub oak and pine cover once sheltered deer, giving rise to the name.[1] The Long Island Rail Road reached Deer Park in 1842, the first railroad station in what would become the Town of Babylon, three decades before the Town itself was created; a stagecoach route ran along Deer Park Avenue to carry passengers on to Babylon village, the Great South Bay and points east.[1] The Deer Park Post Office followed in 1851, with Nathan E. Bassett as postmaster.[2] The hamlet's hospitality trade served travelers and hunters drawn by small game: the Deer Park Hotel, opened by the Buesing family around 1900 at Deer Park and Long Island Avenues and bought by Andrew Wachter in 1906, was later remodeled as the Colonial Inn and, from about 1962, a Knights of Columbus clubhouse; the rival Brighton Arms, opened in 1892 by Asher B. Chivvis and sold the next year to the Long family, became Buck's Tavern before burning in 1959.[1]",
"Rail access also brought industry: Golden's Pickle Works, opened in 1911 by Abraham and Hymie Golden on former farmland along the south side of the tracks, shipped pickles and sauerkraut until a 1935 fire destroyed the plant (the name survives in Golden Avenue).[1] Small farms in and around Deer Park specialized in dahlias, and the Deer Park Chamber of Commerce ran Dahlia Festivals in 1951 and 1952 with flower exhibitions, a baby parade and a crowned Dahlia Queen.[1] The hamlet's own school system traces to the pre-1872 Town of Huntington district structure and became the Deer Park Union Free School District, whose high school opened in 1962.[2] West of Deer Park, a second LIRR depot built around 1875 was named West Deer Park; the Town of Babylon Historian's office reports that repeated traveler confusion between the two similarly named stations led the LIRR to rename West Deer Park to Wyandance (later standardized as Wyandanch) effective January 1, 1889.[7][8]"

"Deer Park Avenue predates its state-highway designation: a stagecoach line ran the road to Babylon and the Great South Bay while Deer Park was still served only by the railroad.[1] NYSDOT's official touring-route description lists NY 231 -- co-signed with NY 27A -- running \"Babylon, Deer Park, Dix Hills (Northern State Parkway),\" tying the hamlet's namesake avenue north to the Northern State Parkway in the Town of Huntington.[11] The Long Island Rail Road's Ronkonkoma Branch, whose Deer Park depot was one of the line's earliest Suffolk County stations (1842), continues to run through the hamlet.[1]"

"The hamlet is bounded, per the Town Historian's office, by the Carll River (running through Geiger Lake and Park) on the west, Sampawams Creek -- the Town of Islip line -- on the east, and the Town of Huntington to the north; when the Town of Babylon separated from Huntington in 1872 the new boundary was drawn 'one mile north of the Long Island Rail Road.'[3]"
